Rugby Referees Supporting Motor Neurone Disease (MND)

Yorkshire Referees have periodically run successful Charity Days for different worthy causes, the last of these was pre-COVID. Due to this and the fact this charity is close to the hearts of all in the Yorkshire region the committee has chosen the MND Association and we hope you will be able to get behind and support it this season.

Over the past few years, the whole rugby community has been touched by the devastating condition of MND. Recently we have lost 2 high profile players to this disease both of which had done amazing work raising awareness and fund raising for MND.

Doddie Weir passed away on the 26th of November 2022 and this year we lost Rob Burrow on the 2nd of June 2024. Ed Slater the ex-Premiership Lock forward is still fighting on against this disease and continues to fund raise. These men were and are giants within their respective codes of rugby and it would be a privilege for Referees and other Match Officials to show their respect for them in a minor way with a proposed charity event to raise money for MND research.

What we would like to do is a purely voluntary donation of either partial or all of each referee’s travelling expenses and/or match fees for 1 weekend of the season. The weekend that has been chosen is that of the 27th to the 29th of September as this is the weekend closest to what would have been Rob Burrow’s 42nd Birthday.

All the money donated will go directly to MND research via a “Just Giving” page that is attached. If anyone would like any more information regarding how this works, please contact me via email (drpark1975@gmail.com) and I would be happy to answer any queries.
