Meet Kev Crawshaw: Federation Secretary of the Yorkshire Federation of Referees

In this interview, we dive into the life and career of Kev Crawshaw, Federation Secretary of the Yorkshire Federation of Referees. From his early rugby days to his current leadership role, Kev shares his journey, challenges, and the exciting future of match officiating in Yorkshire.

From Rugby Player to Referee

Kev’s rugby journey began at age 11, thanks to a commanding teacher, Graham Fletcher. “He told me, ‘Crawshaw Boy, Rugby training after school tomorrow. Be there.’ He wasn’t one to be ignored!” Kev’s love for the game grew, leading him to represent South Yorkshire Schools at Hooker and play for Rotherham Colts. A knee injury at 24 ended his playing career, but years later, a conversation with a former teammate drew him into refereeing. “The rest, as they say, is history.”

First Steps as a Referee

Kev’s debut as a referee was challenging. “It was Wheatley Hills 3rds vs. Stanley Rodillians—a baptism of fire!” Despite tough games, including a brawl during his first league match between Edlington and Adwick, Kev persevered, growing with each game.

Leading the Federation

Kev’s involvement with the Federation began as Secretary for South Yorkshire, which led him to the General Committee. Now, as Federation Secretary, Kev oversees the day-to-day operations, liaises with the RFU, and supports local societies. Balancing these duties with his role as an academy coach, Kev still finds time to walk, fish, and enjoy retirement.

Qualities of a Good Referee

Kev believes a good referee needs integrity, communication skills, judgment, presence, and a drive to continually improve. “You’re always learning in this role. It’s not just about making calls—it’s about managing the game and people effectively.”

Developing Future Referees

Under Kev’s leadership, the Federation is introducing new training programs led by Andrew Vertighan. “This season will see all societies receiving the same training as the Academy squad, plus the introduction of level-specific hubs and online meetings.” Kev is excited about the future, with a £10,000 bid submitted to fund more “Intro to Refereeing” courses and develop a Young Match Officials (YMO) hub.

The Future of Refereeing

Looking ahead, Kev sees growing opportunities for referees, especially with the popularity of non-contact rugby. “There are challenges, but also a lot of potential for referees to grow and thrive.” The rollout of new training hubs is just one part of the Federation’s exciting future.

Beyond Rugby

When not officiating, Kev enjoys outdoor activities, particularly walking and fishing. A fun lockdown achievement? Walking over 3,000 miles—the equivalent of circumnavigating the coast of England!

Final Thoughts

Kev’s passion for rugby and refereeing is clear. His goal? “I want to see referees develop so the game is officiated to the highest standards. Refereeing in Yorkshire will continue to thrive for years to come.”

Kev Crawshaw’s dedication to the game and his leadership within the Federation are vital in shaping the future of refereeing in Yorkshire.
